Dear Family (that’s all of you calverts). Here’s a little bit o’ something I’d like to call “computery things AL says the whole family NEEDS to be using. Today is a lovely little bit of software goodness called Dropbox. Don’t even ask… just go, sign-up, install, and tell me once you have. Then I’ll explain.

Nearly Yearly Post

Gone FishingIn the ever so slight chance that someone has gotten here to check their mail through the web interface (does anyone actually do that anymore?) I highly recommend Roundcube webmail.  There is a link around here to the right somewhere.  Roundcube has a wonderfully clean and efficient interface.  It makes me happy.

Utility

I’m somewhat curious if I can make the information contained here even less useful…

Steal This Wi-Fi

Steal This Wi-Fi

Security Guru Bruce Schneier’s essay on why he does not encrypt his home Wi-Fi connection.

Beginning excerpt from the essay:

“Whenever I talk or write about my own security setup, the one thing that surprises people — and attracts the most criticism — is the fact that I run an open wireless network at home. There’s no password. There’s no encryption. Anyone with wireless capability who can see my network can use it to access the internet.

To me, it’s basic politeness. Providing internet access to guests is kind of like providing heat and electricity, or a hot cup of tea. But to some observers, it’s both wrong and dangerous.”
